Instructions
Preheat a 16-inch electric skillet to medium-low heat at 325 degrees F.
Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a shallow dish big enough for the bread to lie flat.
Melt the butter in the skillet.
Dip each slice of Texas Toast bread into the egg mixture, flipping them over to coat both sides and place in the skillet.
If the skillet is big enough, place all of the coated bread slices in the pan and fry for about 4 – 5 minutes per side. If the skillet isn’t big enough, fry the slices in batches but the total time for the recipe will increase.
Serve topped with pats of butter and syrup or your favorite toppings.
Notes
Notes about ingredients and substitutions
You can also cut the bread into sticks to make French toast sticks.
Butter and maple syrup are the most popular toppings. Jams and jellies are also great, or fresh fruit and powdered sugar. Have you tried mustard? It’s not my thing, but my husband and his family love it on French Toast.
The best bread to use is any thick-sliced bread, like Texas Toast bread, Brioche bread, French Bread, Italian bread, or thick-sliced white bread. Old bread or stale bread works fine too.
